Why nations succeed or fail?
A view on Bulgaria



Prof. James Robinson, co-author of the book “Why Nations Fail”, visited Bulgaria at an invitation of the Bulgarian School of Politics “Dimitry Panitza”. He was in the country between 19 and 23 March 2014 and held a public lecture on the topic “Why nations succeed or fail? A view on Bulgaria.” The lecture was on 20 March 2014 in the Central Military Club, Sofia and raised a great public interest.

Among the guests were the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Development Prof. Daniela Bobeva, Mayor of Sofia Ms. Yordanka Fandakova, ambassadors, members of the parliament, mayors and city councilors as well as representatives of leading non-governmental organizations in Bulgaria, university professors and students. The lecture lasted for about two hours. Prof. Robinson also answered a number of provocative questions.  Almost 200 people managed to gather in the overcrowded hall and many remained to listen the lecture in the hallway. Due to the great interest, the Bulgarian School of Politics “Dimitry Panitza” created this special website, where the lecture could be watched and the materials from the visit could be seen. 

During his visit in Bulgaria, Prof. Robinson had a number of meetings with Bulgarian political and civic leaders. He met with the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, Mayor of Sofia Ms. Yordanka Fandakova, visited the American University in Blagoevgrad and the New Bulgarian University, and also talked to students and academia representatives.

Mr. Robinson’s visit launched the initiative of the Bulgarian School of Politics “Dimitry Panitza” for public lectures by leading international experts, researchers and politicians. The visit was realized with the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
